On the road and in a rut?

Eat Healthy On The Road This Summer

By: Rebecca Ohnona

Summer is an awesome time for families to plan trips, get on the road and vacation while the kids are out of school. While it is great for families take this opportunity to bond and engage in fun activities, parents can't forget the importance of eating healthy while on the road. Although it may be tempting to just stop at fast food restaurants for meals and snacks on the way to your destination, it is important to show your kids that you can always eat healthy, whether at home or on vacation.

Is your family going on a road trip? Make sure to prepare!

Healthy snacking will keep your kids happy, calm and smiling. Some healthy snacks to bring on the road include apples, Greek yogurt, almonds, cheese sticks, whole grain cereal, berries, light popcorn, carrots and dark chocolate. Try to prepare meals before you get in the car so you won’t be tempted to stop for fast food on the road!

Make everyone his or her favorite sandwich on whole wheat bread. Some healthy varieties include natural peanut butter and jelly with bananas, turkey breast with hummus, low-fat cheese with tomato slices and chicken salad with avocado.

Despite all of the healthy varieties, time may not always be on your side. If you do find yourself at a fast food restaurant for lunch or a gas station for a quick snack, check out these good options:

At McDonald’s, try a Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich, which has 28 grams of protein and only 350 calories. For less calories and carbohydrates, don’t eat the bun or only eat half.

For breakfast, McDonald’s has a Fruit and Maple Oatmeal for 290 calories and 5 grams of protein.

For snacks, they sell packs of apple slices and Fruit N’ Yogurt Parfaits.

Find yourself at a Dunkin Donuts? No problem! They now have a line of Egg White Flatbreads, which are good options.

Avoid bagels and opt for English Muffins to save 170 calories.

Ask for reduced fat cheddar instead of American cheese and cut 15 calories.

Always avoid the frozen drinks. These are all extremely caloric and contain a lot of sugar.

At any gas station market, there are plenty of healthy snacks you can find. For the kids, buy Greek yogurts or cheese sticks. For you, grab a pack of raw almonds or carrots and hummus.

Whether you pack your own, or find yourself stopping at seemingly unhealthy locations for food, remember that you can always find healthy options!

Have fun!
